J-Zen is a French producer signed on Dooinit music, his style is a mixture of heavy beats and samples crushed to the point of making them unrecognizable. He made his debut on the beatmaking scene with his first beat-tape called Breakfast, but it’s with Guilty Pleasure EP, alongside Shawn Jackson and Substantial and released in 2010, that he really revealed himself to the public.Since then, he’s collaborated with Georgia Anne Muldrow & Declaime on the single “God Music”, a custom-made production for the California duo, and has shared the stage with the greatest (DJ Premier, Dilated Peoples,…)His first album Managua is available now. Started between Rennes and Paris, recorded in California, Berlin, NYC, Paris, Portland, mixed in San Diego, mastered in LA and Costa Rica, this project and J-Zen have traveled a lot to finish their trip in Managua, where he stayed for a few months.
It's at the very beginning of MF Doom's career that Moar interested himself in the sound of the late artist. He quickly became a big fan of Doom's instrumental projects Special Herbs. This new beat tape is a tribute to his use of samples. Take note that even the name of the tracks have been changed, will you find out what are the originals?
The last and long-awaited third instalment of the trilogy "For The Luv Of It" is finally out, exclusively on vinyl. After Volume 3 and Volume 2, both critically acclaimed and supported by a worldwide audience, E.Blaze just released Volume One, with an emphasis on instrumental versions of some of his classic productions such as "Capital Q" by Infamous Mobb, "Contagious" by D.i.T.C's O.C. and AG from their oasis album, and with a mix of updated bangers from the past alongside some new productions. The musical cocktail of beats is a feast for the ears, and a truly rare piece of hip hop mastery with a beautiful artwork cover to go with it. The instrumental record For The Luv Of It - Volume One Reloaded - Part One is a real treasure to be added to any serious vinyl collection of the genre. Eric Blaze (E. Blaze) is a Paris record shop owner, a worldwide music producer and a label manager at The Group NYC. Before embarking on his New York journey, he co-founded the legendary Hip Hop French group Tout Simplement Noir in 1989 and eventually decided to move to the Mecca of Hip Hop where he has worked for two decades as a vinyl specialist at world-famous A1 and Academy records, and as a music producer, crafting numerous tracks for Hip Hop finest MCs such as Krs one, D.I.T.C., Milano Constantine, OC and AG, Blaq Poet, Infamous Mobb, etc. Over the years, to highlight his skills and efforts, and most importantly recognized and encouraged by his peers. Co-signed by the best original beatmakers in the world, Lord Finesse, DJ Premier, and Large Professor, Eric released on his own New York based company four instrumental records: For the Luv of it Volume Three and Volume Two, Bandwidth and Flip Side.
After a series of funk and jazz flavored singles and production credits for the likes of Large Professor or Diamond D, The Funk League, aka Hugo and the Soulbrother Suspect, is now ready to spread more groove with the release of a full length album this fall, "Funky As Usual".Both from the east side of Paris (20th district), rare groove connoisseurs and vinyl collectors, Hugo and Suspect would eventually meet half a decade ago at the later then-gig (with label mate and collaborator Cleon in the lineup), the "Soulbrothers Break Party", an event where Paris top notch breakdancers and latin/funk listeners would gather round monthly during four years.Quickly, the two began trading records and gathering their best breaks to improve each other productions and DJ sets. They would ultimately record a few demos together, one emerging as their first single as The Funk League, "On & On", featuring Bronx legend Sadat X from Brand Nubian, in 2009. The release featured some tight up-tempo rhythm as well as cold chilling boom bap tracks with swinging sleigh bells, establishing their sound identity, courtesy of that vintage and crispy SP1200 sound, analog equipment and precise turntable wizardry.Still developing this formula, the League then released another EP, this time with Diamond D, Sadat and Andy C on the mic duties on some jazzy baselines and swinging drums, and a 7" single with Swedish crew Speech Defect, showing skills on the deep funk tip. As Hugo and Suspect kept working together on a daily basis, it began clear than the collaboration would go beyond singles and EPs, and that it would give birth to a full length album. "Funky As Usual" is this collection of grooves, covering that three year time span as if it was a single day - and night. A day in the life of two funksters, but also a blend of the duo’s favorite tunes and flows, put together with a precise production trademark (highlighting strong influences of Jazz, Fusion and even Brazilian music), and a subtle sequencing of the songs and interludes through the whole album, thus creating different atmospheric tones and patterns.Same goes for the mic duties, handled by no less than Large Pro, Diamond, Sadat, Gift of Gab from Blackalicious, but also underground favorites Ugly Duckling, Abdominal, or even songstress Kylie Auldist from Aussie funk sensation, The Bamboos, on an all-acoustic acid jazz track performed and co-composed by label mates, The Joyous Juice. As vintage sound doesn't necessarily mean nostalgia, "Funky As Usual" appears as a 2011 update of those legacy sounds we continue to love, from modal jazz to deep funk to nowadays hip-hop or broken beats, holding down the groove traditions for now and beyond.
