Like an ode to your Walkman and to those 90-minute tapes that you used to rewind with your pen, DA BREAK's first LP was all about Funk & Hip Hop 90's flavors. That album immediately found itself on playlists on all your favorite radios (Radio Nova, FIP, Couleur 3, France Inter, RFI, BBC 6…), and enabled Da Break to play live in major festivals and venues (Nuits Sonores, Nuits Zebrées Nova, Radiomeuh Festival, Woodstower, Festival de Marne, Hortus Live…).This was completely unexpected, a major learning experience, and above all a lot of fun and gave the Lyon-based gang a whole lot of ideas for the next stage in their musical journey, propelling them towards new musical horizons: infectious riddims with grooving keyboard & guitar licks as their bedrock and free association leading them into jazz, broken beat, soul or disco vibes … During the creation of Let It Shine, all doors were wide open and all musical genres potentially welcome. The production still has a « home made » feel to it, like the previous album, but with a modern, sonic twist when needed- a result of three years on the road together and new creative input from group members. Whether it be on a New York summertime roof-top, or settled in a Low-Rider with some G-Funk, or moving to some phat Jamaican style bass-lines or getting sensual on a tight breakbeat, lead singer Hawa knows how to shine her feminine and versatile brilliance on the project. She gives to the songs the final touch and the emotion needed to share with us her stories about human relationships - everyday tales sharing her real life-experience.This ever-expanding musical spectrum, Da Break play with it, explore it and also let it kick completely free at times ! Song after song, they bring a magic glow to LET IT SHINE.
Created in 2005, Trevor & Lisa is a Parisian Funk band founded by Sébastien Despicht (guitars, talk box) and Mikael Prignot (programming). With Stéphane Ugolini (keyboards) who joined them later on, they formed the core production trio of the group, helped around with various other talented musicians. Built for live shows, Trevor & Lisa has strongly toured the French and Parisian gigs scenes, with also numerous radio shows (Nova, Generations, Le Mouv, ...) or TV shows (France 4). Additionally they developed several collaborations, for example with famous soul diva Gwen McCrae (as her backing band) or with French singer Mounam (from The Dynamics) on “What Needs Mama” single. Meanwhile, Trevor & Lisa also produced two punchy 7inches released on Favorite Recordings and which could be considered as a preview to a long player. This first LP will finally be released early 2013 on Favorite Recordings, and it’s filled with the same contagious energy they gave off on their previous records and live shows. Clap ‘N' Hustle is like a call to dance, filled by a deep groove and boosted with relentless breakbeats and percussions. With an ambitious production, this first album has involved many talented musicians and many guest singers such as Jehro, US underground rappers Rita J, Raashan Ahmad and Clyde King Rap (Real Fake MC), his longtime mate DJ Suspect (The Funk League) at turntables, or Julien Tekeyan at percussions. The program for this Clap ‘n’ Hustle : instrumentals spiced up with burning breaks (Night Of The Wolf, Tango Hustle, ...), old-school rap influences (Soul Clap, Dope On Plastic, ...), a taste of Californian Blue-Eyed Soul (My Friend ...), some talk box and vocoder embellished with an incisive brass section, all of it punctuated with interludes made of finely selected samples. Finally, Liza Rose and Yann Kesz have brought up their personal touch for visuals, artwork and videos. We hope you’ll enjoy !!
In the 80s, a Nigerian DJ named Hycentto Junior was notorious for making Onitsha people dance on his grooves. Soon, influenced by U.S hip-hop artists, he began rapping on top of the music he played. His eccentric style drew the attention of the biggest name, and the famous Nkono Teles decided to work with him on his next LP, Mama Groove. Their project was released in 1991. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the number of copies available was really low, making it very hard to find.More than 25 years later, working for a motor company, Hycentto met online with French music passionate collective “Lorem Ipsum”, that had randomly found his Mama Groove LP.The result is a reissue auditioning all the 1991 Mama Groove’s tracks and two bonuses selected from his first 1984 album, At A Party Last Night. The unique variety of sounds and genres, covering Electro Hip-Hop, Digi Reggae and Disco-Funk, will carry you from poolside to late night dancefloors!
