NOVEMBER RELEASES

Pat Kalla & Le Super Mojo - Jongler (Favorite Recordings / Gtd vinyl 2LP & CD / November 23rd 2018 / FVR144LP & CD)

First solo LP by Pat Kalla produced by Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart. PAT KALLA is a musician, singer and storyteller, lover of words, French language, and music of course. Born in Lyon, from a Cameroonian father, musician and political activist, and a French and literary mother, he explores from his childhood the Soul, the Slam, the Funk ... and the art of telling stories, life being a great one… After years of touring alongside many bands, and several acclaimed titles alongside Voilaaa, he comes back with this project to put a bit of primordial lightness in a rainy world. Through this new trip, he revisits styles such as High-Life, Makossa, Angolan Music, Afrobeat, Afro-Disco and others. We could talk about “Franc CFA”, we could talk about Jacques Foccart, but we will rather dance, because "the dancer seems naive, but his feet must be connected with earth to understand history…"

The Rongetz Foundation - Alphabet City Music Club (Brooklyn Butterfly Sounds / vinyl LP & CD / October 5th 2018 / BBS009LP & CD)

10 years that The Rongetz Foundation is hanging around the five boroughs. 10 years of wonderful jazz tainted recordings “stained” with the grit of soul and funk music that Rongetz (aka Stephane Ronget) likes to bring to the table. This album, Alphabet City Music Club is a marvelous example of that stylish balance established in between, raw and sophisticated feel. The place of the recording first, Alphabet City, a genuine inner town in Manhattan that was for long time defined like this: “Avenue A, you're Alright. Avenue B, you're Brave. Avenue C, you're  Crazy. Avenue D, you're  Dead”.

OCTOBER RELEASES

Vaudou Game - Otodi (Hot Casa Records / vinyl 2LP & CD / October 29th 2018 / HC59LP & CD)

For the most authentic of frequencies to fully imbibe this third album, Peter Solo entrusted the rhythmic section to a Togolese duo, putting the groove in the expert hands of musicianship that you can’t learn in any school. This was also a way to put OTODI on the path of a more heavily hued funk sound, straightens out when enhanced with frequent guest Roger Damawuzan’s James Brown type screams, and softens when making the way for strings. Snaking and undulating when a chorus of Togolese women takes over, guiding it towards a slow, hypnotic trance. Up until now, Vaudou Game had maintained their connection to Togo from their base in France. This time, recording the entire album in Lomé at OTODI with local musicians, Peter Solo drew the voodoo fluid directly from the source, once again using only Togolese scales to make his guitar sing, his strings acting as channels between listeners and deities…

In his quest to liberate himself from the tyranny of the sequencer, Jeff Mills couldn’t wish for a better partner than the father of Afrobeat. Jeff Mills is a titan of the electronic dance scene and a tireless innovator, who helped to give birth to the 1980s Detroit techno scene before going on to compose electro symphonies, soundtracks and sonic odysseys. Loya is a new project by French producer Sébastien Lejeune, which allows him to research his own cultural heritage, as a native of La Réunion. For the past five years, Loya has been exploring the musical environment of the sister islands of the Mascarenes (Indian Ocean), breaking down the boundaries between electronic music and traditional music in a globalized world. Exploring the blue depths of the Indian Ocean with the fluency of a native, the ten compositions of Corail unfold like an archipelago. Showcasing the talents of traditional musicians such as Mauritius ravanne icon Menwar and Madagascan accordion master Régis Gizavo, Corail finds a fine balance between the soft, velvety ripples of modular synthesizers and the rawness of frantic percussion motifs and local field recordings.

Two movies that embody the two sides of Francois de Roubaix’s approach to recording. For Le Saut de L’Ange (1971), the self-taught composer wrote an orchestration for some fifty musicians playing strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion with two distinct solo instruments alternating the main theme: Indian Sitar on the one hand and accordion on the other. R.A.S (1973) was recorded on a 8-track tape recorder, in François de Roubaix’s home studio rue de Courcelle, where most of his 70’s scores were recorded. The result is a mix of military-march rhythms, rolls on the snare-drum with sounds of Synthi AKS syntheziser: de Roubaix invented a modern sound for this contemporary-History tragedy.

Tony Clarke - Going Home (Jamwax / vinyl 12inch / May 14th 2018 / JAMWAXMAXI17)

Tony Clarke did his first recording in New York in 1971 at Hugh Hendricks recording studio called "Righteous Man" of which he played both bass and lead guitar. Tony Clarke decided to write the song “Going Home” to reference the roots of his music. In those days and even now good reggae music that was being recorded in the United States was not receiving the approbation from home because, in Jamaica they felt that the best reggae music could only come from and be created in Jamaica to substantiate the true feeling of the genre. So he decided to go back to Jamaica and record “Going Home” at Harry J Studio with Sylvan Morris as engineer. He also recorded the cover version to “Hey Little Girl” originally done by Dee Clark. Glen Adams - Stop That Fussing & Fighting (Emotional Rescue-Jamwax / vinyl 12inch / April 9th 2018 / ECR049-JAMWAXMAXI14)

Emotional Rescue and Jamwax end their Capo Disco series by returning to Glen Adams and his cover of Bob Marley’s classic.  The early 70s Lee Perry produced original raw sound is taken to the disco reggae dancefloors of the early 80s with a bottom heavy jam, while his Capo Crew works a killer dub flipside. “Fussing & Fighting” was originally released on the 1971’s Soul Revolution album and for many came during the pinnacle of Bob Marley & The Wailers output, before the smoothing out of their sound during the later “Island” years. Whichever, the guidance and collaboration with Perry transformed the Wailers from a successful Ska / Rocksteady group towards a visionary, conscious, crossover phenomenon. Actually released on both Capo Disco and Marley’s own Tuff Gong, Adams’ vocal marries a disco-dub and guitar groove, dropping, in the latter half, right down to tambourine into perfectly stretched Discomix.

The Crashers - Flight To Jamaica (Emotional Rescue-Jamwax / vinyl 12inch / April 9th 2018 / ECR048-JAMWAXMAXI13)

Emotional Rescue and Jamwax return to Capo Disco with the first ever-official release of a holy grail of the Caribbean disco sound.  Fully licensed and remastered especially for this release, there is no now requirement for badly pressed rip offs. While little is known about the Crashers, all leads point to an incarnation of the revolving “house” band of Glen Adams. As often the case, the floating nature of Jamaican born labels, rhythm sections naming and renaming to fit occasions was endless. Running out of his Brooklyn studio, the otherwise known Outerlimits, Capo And The Crew or even possibly Crashers, the swinging reggae meets funk grooves are apparent. Led from the desk by label owner, producer and writer, Glenroy Adams and co-created a 12” that covers bases in one release.

V/A - Melodies On Wax EP (Elevate Melodies Records / vinyl 12inch / April 9th 2018 / EMR1201)

Elevate Melodies are back with four toe-tapping, finger-snapping, dancefloor slaying heaters, all on wax. Side 1 takes off with the Griffes’ remix of Jay Airness’ “She Staying”, all sumptuous keys, sun dappled strings and peak-time beats propelling the track ever forward. Venice Beach then takes on Sly Moore's seismic “Muoosic”, dropping the tempo and creating a super low-slung slab of electro funk, one for the 100bpm crew. On the B side, Lord Funk takes on “Black Les Grues De Nantes” from Victorius, turning it into a jazzy workout with slap-bass, chopped up vocals and dusty vinyl crackles giving it a classy 90s feel. And rounding out the selection is New York DJ and producer P-Sol who applies his midtempo skills to “Law and Theory” from label boss Jay Airness, creating an atmospheric groove with some real funk and jazz flourishes. Limited to 500 copies.

Otis Stacks - Fashion Drunk (Underdog Records / vinyl LP / April 2nd 2018 / UR871777)

Behind a name that sounds familiar are Elias Wallace and Justmike, two men united to become one: Otis Stacks. In truth, the optimized version of a work started long ago, when Justmike was producing the Danish hip-hop sound of Dafuniks and decided to get in touch with Elias after hearing his voice on a friend’s tune. After traveling miles and miles across the ocean and the seas separating California from Denmark, Elias undeniably became a member of the group. As gigs went on, stages after stages, Justmike got inspired by Elias’s voice and presence. Thus, the idea of a duo collaboration between the two men geminated and grew in his mind. As the evidence of their getting along, “Fashion Drunk” became the first tune to infiltrate Nova and FIP radio playlists, as its music video reached 8 million views. This now obvious complicity as extended in the form of an album, also called Fashion Drunk, released by Underdogs Records.

First solo EP by Pat Kalla produced by Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart.

FEBRUARY RELEASES

Diva - La Nuit (Discomatin / vinyl 12inch / February 26th 2018 / DISCOMAT004)

Beware, Discomatin is back. In 2018, the Parisian crew originally known for their edits goes official with fully licensed and remastered reissues. For this new adventure, they chose an incredible in-demand French boogie EP from Diva, an eighties funk band from Bordeaux. Diva only released one EP with La Nuit, a sentimental, almost poetic boogie banger with great synth, guitar and vocal parts. The track could honestly have been a radio hit in the eighties with some real promotion. Today, it’s still time to make it right and it is already an anthem in the French underground disco scene.  Originally on the B side of the 1985 original release on Cactus, « La Nuit » is here available with its two different versions (12’’ and 7’’ mix) and comes also with “Prise Au Piège”, a more synth-pop influenced funk track which gave its name to the original release. Thanks to Discomatin, it’s now available to the real connoisseurs and still with the fantastic illustrations of French artist Camille de Cussac on the back cover.

Sparrow's visit of Jamaica, “The Isle Of Springs”, during the month of June 1963, has left him with very pleasant and joyful reminiscences of the love, warmth and hospitality of its people. Well! And it's from there it all started, for like Oliver Twist, Sparrow continued, where ever he went to ask for more, and, obviously when the drinks are in, the wits are out. You are therefore left to deduce whatever you may during his presentation of this contribution. “I'll Be Around” (Bossa-Nova) is a warning to one of his lovers of her promiscuous traits towards him and the retribution she would eventually suffer for so doing. Theses two calypso songs were recorded with the famous Bert Inniss National Recording Orchestra. This single 7” is absolutely impossible to find and will warm any dances in the world.
